MISSION

All over the world it is well known that the education in Peru is at an inferior level in comparison to the rest of Latin America. Every student leaves the classroom without a true understanding of what was taught to them. This problem is even more pronounced when the students come from a poorer economic background. Moreover, to add a foreign language program in a public school is like a traveling through a desert: lots of hills to climb and not nearly enough resources. With this impediment of inferior education in their native tongue, how can we help these students truly learn and understand a foreign language?

Seeing the reality of this problem, a group of people have taken action to improve this situation and to introduce people--children, teens and adults alike--to a new world of a foreign language. So we started teaching English. As soon as possible, we also plan to teach other languages such as French, Italian, German, and also create classes in different subjects, such as computer skills. We created the HORIZON school in order to offer inexpensive language classes taught by native speakers and other non-natives that nonetheless have excellent English skills. This way, the people in the poorest economic areas of Trujillo can have access to this beneficial opportunity. This institution is aimed at giving those people a chance to learn a new language--people who were previously unable to afford the expensive language classes offered in La Esperanza. Knowledge of a second language provides them with the skills and opportunities to better themselves and the community in which they live. Here at HORIZON, our goal is to afford the countless people that have limited resources the chance to learn English and expand their horizons; to learn about other cultures and to have better opportunities for the future--opportunities that many people of my generation did not have.
